A medical student becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired. When the allure of easy money sends her into the world of underground surgeries, it ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called ‘freakish’ clientele.
This is one of the most original and intriguing psychological horror thrillers in a long time. Katharine Isabelle is very effective in the lead role and her transformation from a smart and confident medical student into a somewhat deranged psychopath is quite fascinating.
The trigger for that transformation involves the resident surgeon at the hospital where she interns. What happens to him later as a result of what he does is very difficult to watch, as is many of the scenes involving Mary’s newly acquired talent for body modification surgery.
It’s hard to give out more details without revealing too much of the plot, but rest assured, there are plenty of scares and scenes that will make you cringe – if you like that sorta thing.
Although the third act of the film stalls a little bit as if it’s uncertain where to go (maybe it was on purpose) — American Mary is a true gem.
